Road concessionaire Bakwena Platinum Corridor Concessionaire says steady progress is being made on the rehabilitation of the N1 between the Proefplaas Interchange and the Pumulani Mainline Toll Plaza.

The completion date has, however, been extended from the end of this year to March 2027, while the project cost has increased from R276-million to R311-million, owing to additional works to address underlying road surface issues.

Since the start of the project, more than 22 000 t of asphalt have been laid. From mid-July, asphalt overlay works will begin, requiring temporary lane closures on certain interchange ramps, including Proefplaas.

Bakwena has implemented strict traffic management measures to keep travel safe and reduce delays, with a focus on minimising temporary lane closures during peak travel times as much as possible. The majority of the repairs have been scheduled for night-shift works.

Once complete, the project will deliver smoother, safer journeys, improved freight efficiency and stronger regional trade links. It is also creating local jobs and supporting small businesses through local supplier participation, Bakwena says.
